Retirement Community Questions
What is the cost of living in a Retirement Community?
The cost is based on the size of the accommodation and the level of service required. Each individual Chartwell residence will provide you with detailed information on the cost of all accommodations and all services.
If I make this move will I have to move again?
In every instance we will do our utmost to provide you with the care and service that you require. We recognize that people's needs may change over time and we've designed both our residences and our services to accommodate those changing needs. However, if a resident's needs change, we will work with them and their families to determine the best and most appropriate options available.
What furniture do I bring?
Our suites and apartments are typically very generous in size and will accommodate a significant amount of your furniture. We also have a number of residences that will provide furniture as required.
May I have family and friends join me for a meal?
We welcome family and friends! As a courtesy to the chef we ask that you please offer notice that they are coming. A small charge may apply.
What types of services are available in a Retirement Community?
There is detailed information of what is available at each Chartwell residence in the Locate a Residence section of the website. Typically services fall into two categories: convenience and support. There are meals and snacks, recreation and activity programs, laundry and housekeeping, emergency response, medication administration, personal assistance and numerous others. You can review the services to ensure that they meet your personal needs with any of our residence representatives.
If I have special diet requirements, how are they handled?
We have well trained staff who will meet with you to ensure that your meals are prepared according to your needs.
Long Term Care Questions
What is the application process for long term care in Ontario?
The application process and wait list is managed by the Community Care Access Centres. In order to submit applications please contact your local CCAC and they will assign a case manager for your loved one. To find the CCAC nearest you, visit their website.
Are there waiting lists for long term care and how long are they?
Most long term care residences have waiting lists. In Ontario, the CCAC manages the waitlists and would be able to advise as to their length.
What special training does the staff have?
All staff are fully qualified to fulfill their role in the home. In addition, Chartwell provides opportunities for relevant education relating to their job function such as dementia care.
Is there individual freedom for the residents? Can they come and go as they please?
This is based on the individual needs of each resident. Registered staff, with input from the resident’s doctor, assess whether the resident would be able to go outside on their own safely. Family members are also consulted on this decision.
What types of accommodation are available in Ontario?
Long term care offers a variety of accommodation options. People living in LTC pay a fee for accommodation that is based on the type of room they select. “Preferred accommodation” is the term used to describe private or semi-private rooms with special features. “Basic or standard” accommodation refers to ward or shared accommodation. The room type depends on the preference of the family and their financial resources.
What subsidies are available in Ontario?
The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care will subsidize Basic Accommodation according to income. Proof of income includes the notice of assessment received from Revenue Canada for the previous year’s taxes.
Are there situations when a LTC setting would no longer be able to offer care to someone?
This does or may happen but only in the case of behavioural concerns that pose a safety risk to other residents, families or staff. Our LTC residences attempt to manage these situations at the home level first; only if all avenues and resources are not working would they proceed to transfer the resident to hospital and/or another facility where they can be properly assessed and treated.
Can we bring our own furniture?
Families are encouraged to bring pictures and personal items that make the room feel like home for the resident. A hospital bed is provided for resident use. Residents can bring their own furniture as long as the bed is still easily accessible in case of emergency and the amount of furniture does not pose a safety risk to the resident.
