Resident Experience

Our greatest responsibility is the care and service we provide to our residents, and we strive to earn their trust every day. Through our long-term care and retirement homes, we offer seniors a safe and rewarding way of life that meets their needs and allows them to live with comfort and dignity.

2011 Residence Experience Highlights
  • Enhance resident quality of life through innovations in life enrichment programming, wellness, nutrition and resident-centred care
  • Expand research to identify new initiatives to better meet resident needs
  • Continue to raise awareness for residents and their family members/guardians of risk issues for seniors, including vulnerability to fraud
  • Explore tools to better help seniors and their family members/guardians to navigate the complex decision making process of choosing and transitioning to seniors housing

 

Environmental Stewardship

We use management opportunities, where possible, that will help ensure our operations and services are provided in a sustainable manner. We will continue to explore ways to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of the future.

2011 Environmental Stewardship Highlights
  • Continue to explore and use efficiency and energy reduction measures for our existing homes
  • Obtain Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design ("LEED") certification when we rebuild three of our Ontario long-term care homes
  • Integrate LEED features into new developments
  • Reduce the environmental impact of paper usage in our corporate offices

 

Corporate Governance

We are committed to sound corporate governance practices that include accountability,transparency and integrity in all facets of our operations. These practices are overseen by our Board of Directors and Senior Executive team, who strive to adhere to the highest levels of ethics and oversight.

2011 Corporate Governance Highlights
  • Manage risk through quarterly reviews by the Board of Directors of identified risk-related issues to ensure proactive mitigation strategies are in place
  • Ensure privacy policies are known to residents and employees through the development of a Privacy Toolkit and enhanced training
  • Ensure full compliance with all new and existing provincial legislation governing long term care and retirement homes
  • Maintain a leadership position for public disclosure and corporate governance standards, as objectively measured by third parties

 

Community Investment

We believe in building and sustaining strong community relationships. We are proud of our charitable giving partnerships and community initiatives, which are directed toward projects that support seniors in meaningful ways including lifestyle, health, safety and shelter. In tribute to the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, in 2010 we published HONOUR, a moving portrait of 35 WWII veterans and those who supported the war effort. 2011 Community Investment Highlights
  • Launch a new corporate giving partnership with the Canadian Diabetes Association to include corporate donations, fundraising events at Chartwell homes and information for residents and employees
  • Continue sales of HONOUR, with all net proceeds donated to Canadian organizations committed to the remembrance of Canada's veterans, such as The War Amps - Operation Legacy
  • Continue to highlight and support the important community-based initiatives of our employees across Canada, including volunteering, fundraising and information sharing
